Duluth North Pier Lighthouse
Most who have visited Canal Park in Duluth and walked along the waterfront boardwalk have admired this stoic lighthouse standing at the end of a long 1700-foot concrete breakwater pier reaching into Lake Superior, marking the entrance to the ship canal leading to the inner harbor shipyards. Built in 1910 the steel plate-encased iron tower is about 40 feet tall. On a clear night the light can be seen from 11 miles away. Interestingly, the lighthouse's light was originally white, instead of the navigationally correct red, in order to distinguish itself from several red lights visible from nearby St Croix Avenue, in those days a "red light district" home to many a brothel and rough-edged bar.
